Teacher question:
I have recently encountered some severe criticism leveled at reviews and reviewers from What Works Clearinghous (see http://www.nifdi.org/research/reviews-of-di/what-works-clearinghouse). I am concerned about recommending this site to teachers as a resource for program evaluations. I'm wondering if you agree with the criticisms, and if yes, where you would recommend teachers go for evidence-based program reviews. I know that NELP and NRP reports are possibilities but are also static documents that do not get updated frequently with new findings, so some of the information really isn't current. Perhaps the Florida Center for Reading Research is an alternative? Do you have others than you would recommend?

Is the clearinghouse up to date?
When I go to the literacy section and type in phonics I get ten results, but none of which have met research standards. If I type in synthetic phonics it ghttp://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/Topic.aspx?sid=8ives me zero results.
Am I using the site incorrectly or is it saying there is no research available that can be used to assess the impact of synthetic phonics on literacy?
Is the site only assessing research carried out in the USA?

The search capacity is not great. It doesn't allow you to go in and find particular types of programs. The intervention reports are best searched by names... gee, I wonder what the effects of the XYZ Program are?
It will not provide research on the impact of phonics on literacy or that kind of question. It strictly provides an analysis of the research on particular programs. If there is a synthetic phonics program that you are interested in, type in its name, and the analysis of research on that program will come up. Indeed, in many cases, the conclusion might be that there is no evidence that instruction with that program leads to improvements in phonological awareness or phonics. That doesn't mean the program necessarily doesn't work, only that there are no credible studies showing that it does. It will look at research from anyplace.
If you want to pursue an issue like the effectiveness of phonics instruction or that kind of question, then look to the reports of the National Reading Panel or the National Early Literacy Panel. You can find both online.
